ABOUT THE JENNY HERD
There are between 40-50 donkeys on Bramoth Farm. The Taylors have built this herd by traveling around the country looking for jennies and buying some as they found ones that might contribute size, quality, color or superior conformation. Sometimes they purchased entire herds and have eventually sold the extra jacks or too-small jennies. At one time there were over 80 on the place and that’s a lot of feeding to do in the morning before going to a full time job. The jennies in the breeding program are sorrels and blacks of different backgrounds, and some are daughters of the jacks on the farm. Dr. Taylor takes in outside jennets for breeding to the jacks, also. His new barn and lab are set up for natural breeding or A.I. And the bred jennies are separated to receive a boosted nutrition.
Visitors can walk through the jenny herd pasture where the “girls” will come up for a scratch or a rub and it is sometimes difficult to stand back and look at one because she will follow you and will want to be too close. When I tried to photograph jennies here I had to hang a jacket on the tree. As they cautiously approached this new “spook” I got some great shots.
The Taylors welcome visitors to Bramoth Farm and when you are going to be in this part of the country give them a call. If you carry your BRAYER with you, you will find them in the professional directory.
